Tamazight · IRCAM Neo-Tifinagh

Writing system course · 8 lessons · 44 entries

Learn the 33 core and 11 extended IRCAM Neo-Tifinagh letters in eight short lessons, with Latin readings, IPA and Arabic sound approximations.

This course follows the Neo-Tifinagh chart supplied for YallaTongues. It keeps the core alphabet separate from the extended letters and preserves the chart’s Latin readings and IPA values.

Arabic equivalents are approximate pronunciation aids. Some sounds have no direct counterpart in Arabic; those entries explain the closest written approximation. The chart’s listed /w/ IPA for ⵓ alongside the Latin reading u is preserved in its note.

Start with the core vowels and consonants, then study labialized forms and the extended letters. Preview later lessons as needed; beginning the course adds only its first lesson to review.

How to practice

Compare each glyph with its Latin reading, IPA and Arabic approximation. Trace the Tifinagh glyph, then check recognition and production. Treat the Arabic forms as sound aids rather than exact equivalences.

Course outline

Use the outline to choose what to preview. Starting the interactive course begins with the first lesson; later lessons become available as you continue.

  1. الحركات وأشباه الحركات

Begin with the vowel and glide forms. The chart gives u for ⵓ but lists /w/ as its IPA; both source values are preserved.

  2. الصوامت الوقفية

Practice the basic stop consonants with their chart readings and Arabic approximations.

  3. الصوامت المفخمة

Compare the emphatic consonants and note where Arabic gives a close match.

  4. الصوامت الاحتكاكية

Practice the fricatives, including sounds represented by ح, خ, غ and ش as pronunciation aids.

  5. الصوامت الأخرى

Continue with the remaining consonants and the chart’s Latin readings.

  6. الصوامت المستديرة

Study gw and kw as labialized consonant forms.

  7. حروف IRCAM الإضافية: الصوامت

Review the extended consonants. Some Arabic approximations use regional characters or explanatory labels.

  8. حروف IRCAM الإضافية: الحركات

Compare the extended o vowel sign with its Latin reading and IPA range.
